Year
2020–2021
I started this (very!) personal project in order to document my life. My memory is appalling, so I decided I would snap one instant picture each day in 2020, and write a diary entry to go with it. I was hoping this would help me remember ‘an ordinary year in my life’. Ironic! Little did I know... Obviously, the year turned out to be anything but ordinary for any of us.
But it wasn’t the pandemic alone for me: 2020 also spelled the end of an 11-year-long relationship and a cancer diagnosis for my father, who I’d only recently gotten to know. It was the strangest and scariest year of my life, and it seems almost fated that I should have decided to chronicle it. Most of the content is too personal to publish, but I’ve chosen snapshots.
The main color, a dusty mint green, was inspired by what an instant picture taken with my Fujifilm camera looks like when ruined by old age or exposure to light (shown above). The two other greens were chosen to compliment it. I enjoy pairing thick, imposing sans serifs with gentle and expressive serifs, which is how I landed on this combination of Voyage and Dia. I scanned all 366 images and included the polaroid frames in the book to show their origin.
