This project was inspired by a quote by media philosopher Marshall McLuhan: “The future of the book is the blurb”. In today’s busy media landscape, where most of us no longer have the patience for longform content, it often feels like we’re only getting part of each story we see, hear, and read. Worse still, the internet is now a place where anyone can publish anything, and it’s quickly getting filled with texts and images that simply regurgitate material that already exists online.

I chose to interpret McLuhan’s quote through the lens of a fashion magazine, since those are the vessels that deliver us our visual trends from year to year, thus both creating and reflecting the zeitgeist. What would it look like if the likes of Vogue and Elle started displaying their content in this truncated, fragmentary way? What are the ramifications of us already consuming our news like that? These thoughts guided the design of my experimental publication. I originally designed it by hand, through cutting and pasting old fashion magazines (see above). Later, I made a digital version (see below).
